r3 multi media

I'm uber-excited about this and I'm going to cut and paste a bit from something I posted elsewhere so a few of you might have seen this. But it's been a bit updated.

I am going to start a multi-media company. Not just me, but my cousin Mark (uber-talented photographer), my Dad (the investor and administrator for now) and my brother AJ (photographer). At this point in my life, I need to do something. Whether it's make my portfolio (finally) and find a job elsewhere which will be a career, or do something to take this job further. There isn't much room to grow here at my Dad's company. I've ventured about as far as this role will take me. I'm 31 years old with a family and need to really turn this into a career that will take me places rather than a job.

My Dad has been toying around with the idea of starting a multi-media company which will be owned by his kids and eventually he drops out of it and it's ours. We're talking 5-10 year plan. Mark is a talented photographer (http://www.flickr.com/photos/dazzox3) and him and I have worked together the last two years. AJ needs some guidance and this could be awesome for him. He's a talented photographer and just needs a few more years under his belt of experience and maturing. I have the web, graphic, print and photo design background. Together, we are actually fairly talented. My Dad sees this and realizes there could be something there.

After much consideration because believe me, I'm still hesitant to tie myself to my family like this the rest of my life, we've decided we're all in. I need a career and something that will be a future for me and my kids and Eric. This will give me a chance to own a company and do something I love. I'm stoked. I'm also super cautious but I'm taking the road less traveled since I've hit the proverbial fork. Actually, I guess in our family this is the road more traveled because my father and sister have done this also.

Our concept is for us to be a package place. Meaning, not only can we do the photography for your wedding (Mark) but we can also do the inviations, set-the-dates, favors, reply cards (Brooke) and videography (freelancers we know). Or, if you're having a charity event, again, we can do invitations, a website, info sheets about the charity, photography at the event including bringing a printer and printing out pics right there. Or, for a store, do you need a logo and a website? Well, we can also take product shots and put them into a catalog or on the web.

Part of this is that I will seek to either finish my degree in Creative Advertising (possible double major in Graphic Design with a minor in Consumer Behaviorism). I have two classes left for my major, that's it. Just Journalism Law (150 court cases to know) and my senior year Campaigns Class (get a real client and do a full campaign, cuz you know, I haven't been doing that the last 5 years ). That's if my college, Drake University, was doing the same program still. But that's almost 10 years ago now But I have almost all my gen eds to do (hello bong hits in college). Or, I will do some major studying and take classes to help me pass the ACEs for Adobe programs. ACE = Adobe Certified Expert and I would do it for the full Creative Suite - photoshop, illustrator, inDesign and Dreamweaver. Possibly Flash too. That is a LOT of work, probably more than just finishing my degree with gen eds. But, finishing my education (either route) is extremely important to me and I will do it whether or not we started this company. It's a goal I have.

We had our 1st business meeting yesterday and we are ready to go. First assignments have been handed out and we are on it. Wish us luck!

An awesome thing happened in our household

No, we are NOT pregnant. Get that thought out of your head.

The last two years, Eric has been unemployed. Things have been tight and we are dealing with what we have. It's not great but somehow, someway, we're making it through. Xander has found out what a Nintendo DS is. And he's been asking for one. Two weeks ago, he made a Christmas Wish List (ignore the fact that it's June LOL) and the first thing on it? Yup, a DS. He really is such a good kid and I would love for him to be able to have one. Granted, we'd have time limitations but I think it would be great for him.

Well, that opportunity came up this week. It actually came up months ago but it finally happened. LOL There is a blog I read all the time. The woman's name is Crystal and her blog is Boob, Injuries & Dr Pepper. She is raw, honest, openly caring and shares her life with us. Read her "Crazy Chronicles" and bring your tissue. She is funny and a great person. Does she have faults? Sure, who doesn't? What I love about Crystal is that she will own up to her faults and tries to fix them. There are so many people who think their shit doesn't stink and will put on a false face to appear better. Crystal is real and I love that about her.

Quite a few months ago, her daughter received a DS for her birthday and ended up leaving it at a restaurant. When they realized what happened, the called and the staff said it would be put away and wait for them. When they got there to pick it up, it was gone. And Crystal was pissed and blogged about it. Just like I would too. The outreach of her blogging community in this situation was flabbergasting. The restaurant manager, corporate, fellow readers, etc all wanted to help replace this for her daughter. In the end, Crystal realized she had a great opportunity to give some joy to kids whose parents couldn't afford a DS. People were donating left and right and Crystal started the "Pay It Forward" campaign.

Once people started donating, she asked for people to write in about kids that were deserving of one. There were so many heartbreaking stories of families with job losses, sickness, etc and their kids just being great people, stepping up and being responsible or giving up their own toys or joys for others. I hesitated to write in about Xander, there were other families who were so much more deserving. Eventually, I wrote to Crystal. At that time, the donations had slowed down and Xander was on the later list. Which, still, was fine. I was hopeful but not counting on anything. Lo and behold, a few months later, Crystal emailed me to say that someone was donating a whole batch of them and would Xander still like one? I started bawling. I could not believe how fortunate we were and all because of Crystal's good-heartedness.

The DS came in the mail today (THANK YOU CRYSTAL AND YOUR DONATION KING!) and he was THRILLED. God forbid he show emotion in a picture lately though. But here are pics of him opening and then posing with it. You can bet that when we can, we will Pay It Forward, somehow, some way. Thank you.

Busier than a one-legged man in an ass-kicking contest

LMAO That would be us recently.

We had a great time this Memorial Day weekend, with events on every day. Friday was going out to watch the Hawks game with friends, Saturday was the zoo and a movie, Sunday was a birthday party and Monday was a BBQ. I'm taking a vacation day to catch up on stuff around the house.

This coming weekend will be a lot of fun too! I have a dinner out with sorority sisters on Friday, Book Club @ my house Saturday (which means mimosas LOL) and then spending the day with family all day on Sunday.

And I'm sure there's more that I'm forgetting. Wed. night I have dinner with a good friend.

The kids are doing great. Alexander is almost a 2nd grader!! Next week is his last week of school. On 6/15 (which is my birthday), both boys start swim lessons for the summer.

That's about all for now.
